Palm Garden El Palmeral - Elche
The Palm Garden of Elche (El Palmeral) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 2000) and the largest palm garden in Europe. With more than 200,000 palm trees, this is a unique oasis in the Spanish landscape.
El Palmeral dates from the Moorish era and is over a thousand years old, established during the 10th-century Caliphate of Córdoba. The Arabs built an ingenious irrigation system that is still visible and in use today.
Walk through the shady paths among the impressive date palms. The Huerto del Cura (National Artistic Garden since 1943) is the most beautiful part, with the famous Imperial Palm - a unique palm tree with seven trunks named after Empress Elisabeth of Austria who visited in 1894.
The garden is beautiful year-round, but in spring everything blooms and it is particularly photogenic. Take your time to enjoy the peace and special atmosphere. Admission to Huerto del Cura is €6.50 for adults, €4.50 for seniors and students.
